This boat building class gives kids the opportunity to build their own boat from a kit using high-quality materials at a reasonable cost. During the class, participants will use our tools and learn boat-building skills from experienced staff in a friendly environment. The result will be a beautiful boat participants will be proud to use on protected waters.

Class Timeline

Day 1
• Introduction, see full sized example boat.
• Scale models of the boat will be made- from a kit, to illustrate the building process before moving to full scale.
• Kids go to building stations- one instructor per three kids.
• Zip tie precut parts of boat together – in groups of three (two kids, one instructor)
• As a class, assess progress, check boats for squareness, – into to next step
• Kids tape outside seams of boat with blue tape. (Individual activity, instructors help as needed)
• Group demo on filleting/glass taping seams.
• Kids use caulk guns to lay down thickened epoxy fillets – in groups of three (two kids, one instructor) One boat at a time, the group will work to fillet the seams, to ensure correct technique and keep the mess/excess glue usage down.
• Fiberglass tape is pressed into epoxy fillet – in groups of three (two kids, one instructor)

Day 2
• Remove blue tape, cut zip tie ends, and soften chine (glue seam) edges with sanding blocks (Individual activity, instructors help as needed)
• Epoxy and glass tape the outside seams, using skills learned the previous day. – In groups of three (two kids, one instructor)
• Glue on gunwales – in groups of three (two kids, one instructor)
• Assemble paddles from kit of parts (Individual activity, instructors help as needed)
• Group lecture on basic boat safety, (pertaining to the boat launching event)

Day 3
• Flip Hulls – in groups of three (two kids, one instructor)
• Scribe and attach decks – in groups of three (two kids, one instructor)
• Clean up any stray epoxy with sandpaper/prep for primer coat.
• Roll and tip on coat of primer. – in groups of three (two kids, one instructor)

Day 4
• Meet up for christening party/ first paddles @ the small craft harbor on front beach in OS. Class participants will christen their boats and paddle around in the protected waters of the harbor.

Cost: $500.00 per boat – two children or a parent and a child can build one boat
